Electric Feel (Bones/Treble)
« on: May 16, 2017, 07:55:05 AM »
This was the spot, wasn't it?   This particular patch of jungle was where the legend had begun, according to local folklore.  Two massive trees with another piece of trunk having somehow wedged between them, making something that almost felt like a naturally made torii, deep in the heart of the jungle... it was odd that he'd never seen this place before his last time here.  Well... perhaps not that odd?  The first time he'd trekked through the Amazon he was so much younger, so much dumber.   How he'd ever made it out alive, he would never understand.  Still, this time he was back and with a purpose.  Christopher Leigh, age thirty-two, a globe-trekker of some renown, at least in the circle of folks into that sort of thing.   He had been through ancient Egyptian tombs, Mayan temples, deep into dangerous caves, climbed mountain passes that were considered ridiculously dangerous for any normal, sane sort.

That being said, just as much as he was reknowned, quite a few of those who had met him personally did wonder if he was a few cards short of a full deck.  Mostly the cards that sensed fear. Hell, even he wondered that sometimes.   After all, even now the legend he chased brought him alone into the middle of one of the most dangerous places known, or rather unknown to mankind.  The Amazon had so many mysteries surrounding it... but the one he was after simply took the cake!  In the same vein as the Loch Ness monster, or Sasquatch, there had been sightings of 'something' in this jungle- something much different from any normal creature.   Only the locals, and those who were respected by them knew of this particular legend.  Like most legends of course, the majority ignored it.  However, Chris got a 'twitch in his tail', the tell-tale sign that if he chased this particular thing, he would find something... something amazing!

That all leads up to the border collie's current location just outside of the torii.  After lacing up his trail runners, donning a pair of cargo shorts and a matching khaki vest with a merino wool shirt underneath, and tossing all the necessities into his backpack he started to dive into the Amazon.  A jacket would have been necessary if he didn't expect he'd get wet nonetheless, even if the area and season saw that it wouldn't be so heavily soaked over simply being cloud-covered all year long.   A stick was his only companion on this road, used to keep his body from getting stuck in the mud or assist in pushing things in his path out of his way- this sturdy stick had been with him through quite a lot.  Though most who saw it thought he'd whittled it himself, the truth was he'd simply found it smoothly polished and straight as an arrow already.  A lucky find indeed!

Pushing his dark hair out of his face, the border collie finally took his first step into the 'shrine' area, his ears perked and eyes peeled.  Whatever he was looking for, he wanted to lower his chances of missing it as much as hu...caninely possible.  Whatever it was, he'd been told that those who searched for it often lost consciousness.  Even if he did, he'd want to lay his eyes on the vision beforehand- even just a little peek to prove it was not just an urban legend, or some trick of the flora, would be enough proof of what his tail twitch told him.  If he found any sign of whatever vague thing for which he searched, he figured he just might stick around for more than the week he initially planned!

It had gotten quiet in the recent months. But it was summer, and Damini knew that summer brought them out of the woodworks. It was groggy, given the summer was the wet season, and for those who didn’t know how to deal with the Amazon’s unique weather conditions, it was easier to just stay inside. But there were a select few who had studied the weather and didn’t seem to mind that they often got caught in the rain. Whatever they were after, it was worth more to them than the pain it would take to even get where they were going, especially this deep into the forest. If someone wanted something this deep, they had to have incredible motivation. And, unfortunately for Damini, she was often the spark of most of these treks. Fortunately for her, she surpassed her legends, and could defend herself easily. She never sent them back dead. But she also never sent them back with clear memories.

On this early evening, as the sun painted a rich, deep red and purple picture across the sky, Damini thought she’d gotten away with another beautiful day to herself. It was lonely sometimes, but better than being captured and studied, as all of her visitors seemed to want to do. Abandoned at an early age, when her unique… abilities seemed to scare her parents, Damini had found sanctuary in the forest. It had raised her, and molded her, into a strong woman. And the sharkess had given up hope that any would come simply to know her, as opposed to owning her. In her early years, she’d tried to make contact with some of the travelers of the forest. But always when they found out what she was capable of, they tried to possess her, to take her back to the city, ship her all over the world, maybe even dissect her to see just how she worked. It wasn’t long after Damini was left by her parents that she knew foreigners who made their way into her forest were not there for any pure reasons.

Luckily, Damini had also learned early in her solitude that four legged creatures, those not quite as evolved, did in fact make good company. She was a friend of many in the forest. Large and small alike seemed to come to her with their troubles, and for her offered shelter. This companionship was, at least, able to keep Damini sane in her loneliness.

Slipping her legs into the cool pool in the center of her clearing, Damini let the heat of the day melt from her. As she perched on a large rock, her back was to the entrance of her clearing; in the absence of intruders, Damini had grown a bit too comfortable, and her guard was down. The nights, although not cold, always had a cool and eerie quality to them. As the sun set, it was as if Damini could feel the danger creeping in around them, and yet the comfort of her home, too, felt stronger. Everything felt stronger in the dark.

When one has run trails and been on expeditions as much as Chris, one tends to learn certain signs and symbols one always has to follow.  Sign number one- the natives always know best.  Sure, some of them would like to carve you up into an eight piece meal, but they still understood the lands better than anyone else.  This even goes for the native creatures.  By watching them, understanding them, and showing them the proper amount of respect and caution in the meantime you could learn a lot.   You could learn the secrets- places where they gathered, places where they stayed away, all of it turned into signs to follow for those who had the experience to know how to follow them.  Past the torii, Chris saw many of these signs.  He had to prepare, he had no idea when he was going to find what he was looking for!

He pulled a waterproof camcorder out, one with a jacket for secondary protection just in case.  After pressing record, he started to search through the viewfinder rather than looking with his own eyes.  He stumbled just a little bit when he didn't check his feet as much, but it was a lot better focus with a more narrow view.  Thankfully for him, all of his preparation and caution didn't seem to be necessary.  It was perhaps a touch of irony, but the creature for whom he was looking seemed to just... show up.  He stayed on the edge of the clearing, his breaths quiet, eyes focused on the viewfinder.  If he hadn't been looking specifically for her, he might have possibly thought she was a traveler taking a break in the middle of the forest. Sure, it was maybe a little odd to undress in the middle of a rain forest of all things, but he'd certainly seen weirder than that- not to mention the rain had let up for the time being, which made it slightly better.  Regardless- he could tell.  This wasn't a normal woman.  He set his pack down and got closer, hiding himself behind a nearby tree with a moderately larger trunk than normal.   He wanted to see her more than just through the viewfinder!

He didn't know how long he'd just looked there staring at her.  It was like he could feel the mystery and mysticism wafting off of her!  Even if there was nothing truly behind the rumors more than maybe just someone who had the occasional bath in the rain forest, he could see just WHY there were rumors!   Still... his tail never failed.  There had to be something more than that... right?   He had to know more.  He needed to confirm what his tail told him!   And so... Chris did as Chris always did.  He decided to tackle the problem head on.

"Hey!"  A blatant exclamation as he stepped from behind the tree.  Admittedly he might have forgotten that most women did not appreciate being peeped upon, but his mind was all full of excitement and desire for knowledge!  That needed to be satisfied before his desire for anything else!   He waved his hands over his head, making his presence full and well known far before he got anywhere close to her.  If she was anything like the creatures in the forest, it was best to make absolutely certain he didn't get into her spook zone without her recognizing he was moving towards it.  ...actually, how big was her spook zone anyway?  Only one way to find out!

The shark felt eyes on her long before the exclamation announcing the male’s presence. But, for whatever reason, the gaze didn’t feel threatening. As if he were simply a lost okapi, or baby jaguar, the gaze felt curious and seeking. And Damini, compassionate as she was, opted to let the creature come to her in his own time. Which, of course, she regretted upon hearing his true voice.

Attention snapping across, Damini’s own gaze fixed the intruder with harsh, narrowed eyes turned over her shoulder. How another two-legged creature had snuck up on her was a mystery. And maybe it was this mystery, or the nagging reminder of how his gaze had felt that made her hesitate. Whatever it was, she did hesitate, long enough to lock eyes with the collie, and long enough to spark her own curiosity. He had no cage, he had no entourage, and the sun was rapidly setting. What would bring him out at this hour, when she was at a clear advantage? Maybe he didn’t know the whole story, or didn’t believe it. Maybe he was lost.

With an almost roaring sound, Damini sprang from where she sat dangling her legs into the pool. The movement was abnormally fast, and before her intruder knew it, he’d be pinned on his back, the shark hovering over him ominously. Deep eyes, full of pain and confusion, and something without words, searched the canine’s own for answers to unspoken questions. She’d never let one get this close, but none who had searched for her had ever given off these feelings. They found her by accident, and could go home with their ghost stories, or they found her on purpose and wouldn’t go home without their prize unless she interfered. Something about this one felt different.

With a cautious hand, Damini’s palm pressed to the male’s chest. It was in an effort to connect, something she hadn’t done since very young, but the jolt she felt as she touched him served as a reminder of reality, and knocked her back into reality. As her palm flattened to his chest, it pulled away quickly, and, as if she had grabbed pure light from the air around them, a cracking whip noise could be heard before the collie was knocked unconscious.

Chris would have been surprised to know just how much thought had gone into letting him catch sight of her.   Though he'd sort of sneaked up on her, he also... well, hadn't.  At least, he hadn't expected to, or tried to.  He figured he was a large enough creature that as soon as she approached, she'd recognize that he wasn't natural to the environment.  Was he really so in tune with nature that he had come off like an animal?  If he'd known such a thing, he would have certainly been proud of himself!

Unfortunately for him, it wasn't proud that he felt at that particular moment.  There was a moment of surprise- perhaps even fear- as the shark woman traversed the area between them in less time than it took for him to blink.  He was slammed down on his back, cringing as his body went into a slight skid and his camera was knocked completely from his grasp, possibly lost to the jungle forever.  He looked up at her, his eyes wide... oh.  Was he going to die?  ...no.  No, he didn't feel like that.  Somehow, he just didn't think it was his time.  But in this position, though the breath had been knocked from his body, it took him time to realize it.  He stared into her eyes... she had beautiful, wild eyes.  No wonder some thought of her as some sort of descended, wild goddess... however, that beauty seemed laced with something.  Something it took him far too long to recognize.  He didn't have enough time before that hand pressed against his chest.  He looked down, then back up.  His mouth opened, curious, questioning, wanting to know what was going on... but nothing came out of his mouth.

By the time he realized something had happened, it had already happened.  The collie was knocked out cold without another word, and only a few moments in his memory of the goddess of the jungle.   If he was allowed to dream, however, his dreams would certainly contain her this evening.
